The Urbanization Riviera del Sol in Mijas Costa is located between Torrenueva and Calahonda, on the westside of La Cala de Mijas. This area is popular with tourists as it has a lot of quality apartments, with all you need within proximity.
HOW TO REACH RIVIERA DEL SOL?
You can easily reach Riviera del Sol via the road A7 between Fuengirola and Marbella. The exit is well indicated and you have 2 main reference points: the shop OpenCor, completely in bleu and visible from the road and on the other side the Restaurant MAX with his international flags on top of the building. If you have taken the toll road AP-7, you will need to take exit 200 ‘Calahonda’. As soon as you leave the tollway, takeleft and you are in Riviera del Sol. A bit further your will see one of the nice statues of Riviera del Sol: The Lady in the Bath.
WHAT CAN YOU DO HERE?
The beach of Riviera del Sol is very clean and never over crowded even in the summer. Parking near the beach is not obvious as only a limited amount of spaces is foreseen. I therefore recommend that, you either walk to the beach. All apartments are within a 15 minutes walk or less of the beach side, or if you do take your car, to park it near the OpenCor and cross the A7 by the tunnel to reach the beach. The chiringuito in Riviera is open all year round and the salads they offer really are worth a try. During the summer months July and August, live guards are available on the beach for the safety of the kids (and adults).
Beside the Chiringuito, the Restaurant MAX is also located on the beach, with a lovely terrace. This is not a beach bar but a proper restaurant and they do not allow you to enter in swimwear. The food is international although with a strong gastronomic French and Belgium touch, delicious but a bit more expensive than the regular restaurants in Mijas Costa. Other good restaurants in the area are The Plaza, with Italian cuisine and often flamenco or other shows for a great entertainment evening out. The Restaurant La Rocca with Argentinian Steaks, is located bit higher up in the urbanisation.
The Park Lady Diana at the beginning of the Avenida del Golf gives you an opportunity to stroll and have a rest in the shade. During the summer , an evening market is held here on Friday and Saturday night. Across the street of the Park lady Diana, you have a small secured dog park, where you can let your dog play loose with others.
At the Aztek Sport center, which is located in the street left of the park Diana, you can play Tennis, football, swim in a sports swimming pool or work out in Eric’s Gym. They also have Pilates, Zumba and Yoga classes if you like to stay in shape.
The bars of this urbanization are concentrated around 2 points: near the OpenCor at the bottom of Riviera del Sol, and the other area a bit higher up which is called Las Terrazas. Davids Bar and George’s Bar are located near the A7. I do not really have a preference but Davids Bar has a younger public then George’s Bar. In Las Terrazas you find a music bar and a cosy internet café owned by an English couple. She bakes very good cakes and cookies that they put on sale in the bar. Wifi is free and they have about 7 computers you can use for only 1€ per half hour.
SHOPS
The OpenCor is probably the best know supermarket, open 7 days a week from 7am until 11pm even 2am in the summer. It is very convenient although the prices are higher and choices are limited. The other supermarket only 10 meters further, MAS supermarket has a vast surface and has everything you would need during your holiday. When your apartment is located a bit higher up in Riviera del Sol, you better go shopping in the supermarket in the Las Terrazas complex.
In the Commercial center where the MAS supermarket is located you also find a souvenir shop, an exchange office, a little coffee shop and a Tabaco shop.
GOLF
Of course, Mijas is the city for golfers and the urbanization of Riviera del Sol has 2 main golf areas: Miraflores golf and Calanova golf. To reach Calanova golf you better have a car as it is a bit higher up in the mountain but this course is very popular with international golfers. Miraflores nearly cuts the urbanization in half with an oasis. The practice bunker is easy to reach via the Avenida del Golf and has a lovely clubhouse with view.
Riviera del Sol is a peaceful and relaxing community of Mijas Costa. I would certainly recommend this area to couples with small children or for those who want to be in a quieter area although with all facilities close by. Due to his easy access to the AP-7, the toll way between Gibraltar and Malaga, you can easily go for day trips and explore other cities in Andalusia.
