The social etiquette in Mijas and the whole south of Spain is in general the same as any European country. The Costa del Sol is mainly living of tourism and this has perhaps influenced the behavior.

Mijas is a all year round holiday destination, but besides these tourists, a lot of expatriates from all over the world have come to Mijas to live permanently here in Andalusia. This fact has altered the customs in Mijas.

The locals of Mijas are very helpful. They even have a foreigners department at the town hall to assist the expatriates. As a tourist you will soon notice that people here are always ready to help you, either with directions or information. Most also speak another language beside Spanish and even if they don't they will speak very slowly, so you will understand them.

One of the customs in Mijas and Spain is, as in many European countries to excuse yourself when you interrupt someone for a question or information, and of course to thank them at the end. 'Gracias' is a word that you should remember.

Another social etiquette in Mijas is whenever you are invited to a party, coffee, etc by the locals, it is a custom to always first refuse the invitation. The Spanish will insist after this first refusal and you can then accept. Although don't worry they will not be offended if you do accept straight away.
