Before your departure from home, even if you are travelling in your own car, you need to let a vet confirm that your pet is in a good health condition. This needs to be certified in the internationale passport of the dog or cat. No need to mention that all the necessarie injections need to be up to date, although only Rabies is mandatory here in Spain. Your pet needs to be 'chipped' and registered in your home country. Dogs mostly are nowadays, but for cats this is not always the case.

Like most of the European countries, a dog or cat needs to be transported in a cage in the car, although is the pet is safely attached by a lead in the car, this is also excepted. Special car leads are available in most petshops.
You arrived safely and with all the necessary paperwork with your pets in Mijas, Great! Be aware that it gets very hot here in the summer and the animals need plenty to drink. A last advice or rather warning: During the period starting mid February until May, caterpillars are found here in the pine trees. These species live in a sort of cotton woll nest in the trees and come down during this period to lay their eggs in de ground. It looks like a white winding lijn on the floor as they go in group , head to tail. These caterpillars are very toxic and when sniffing or likking this line, your pet will get the toxic on his nose or tongue. This toxic is so strong that the tongue of your pet can completely paralised and without urgent treatment (less the 1hour) your dog might loose his tongue or die. The caterpillars are also toxic for humans and causes strong irritations of the skin when in contact with them. The local town hall makes a lot of effort in prevention by praying the trees, but you need to watch out when walking your pets in Mijas near pine trees.
