Major cities

Mijas is centrally located on the west coast of the Costa del Sol, ideal to make some excursions. We have commented on certain main cities near Mijas that are worthwhile visiting.

Malaga is the capital of this province and definite a visit worth. This city with a mayor port has about 700.000 inhabitants. Malaga offers you a wide range of monuments, history and shopping areas. Whilst strolling on the 'promenade' or in the car free center of the city, you will enjoy the authenticity of this Andalusian city. The Feria of Malaga that takes place in August lasts for 10 days and nights.

At the far end of the Costa del Sol is Gibraltar. This is still a colonies of the united kingdom. The tax free area is overloaded with shops but 'the Rock' is nice to visit. The top of this rock can be reached by cable or for the more sportive traveler through a steep path. Once at the top of the rock you will enjoy a spectacular view. The apes that live on this rock are a true amusement to watch.

An important historical city near Mijas is Ronda. At about 1 hour drive through the mountains you will reach this Spanish Celtic town. In the northern part of Ronda (the most recent part) is the oldest and most famous bull ring of Spain. The southern part of Ronda has an extensive history and the most important monument is the 'Puento Nuevo', dated 18th century and covering a gap of more then 100 meters deep. This is one of the best excursions of the area!

Main cities near to Mijas are Marbella (30 km) and Fuengirola (9km). A bus can easily take you to these cities. Marbella is famous for his area 'Puerto Banus', a luxurious port for yachts and and a square nearby where you might bump into an international celebrity. At Fuengirola a huge weekly market takes place where you can find plenty of souvenirs and great fashion deals. The coast with a long 'promenade' of nearly 8 kilometers has several bars, restaurants and shops. This is also the spot to party all night in one of the modern discos or musical bars.

Other nice coastal towns are Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Both very lively but with more noise nuisance during the busy summer holidays then Mijas. Torromolinos was one of the first holiday locations at Costa del Sol, although you could not tell due to the good renovations that occurred all year round. Benalmadena is worth visiting too, with his castle Bil-bil and the gardens of Muro, a composition of plants and water by César Manrique.

Most local travel agents offer day trips to these main cities near Mijas. The local tourist information office can also inform you concerning them and offer you extra useful information. In our sections 'circuitos' you can find day trips within your destination or even to other main cities near Mijas.
