The dress trend in Mijas is mainly casual. Lots of people are here on holiday so shorts and slippers are a normal sight in the streets. You can only see typical clothing and dresses during the feria's.

The dress trend in Mijas is of course linked to the tourism and the nice weather at the Costa del Sol. Mostly people dress casual, even sports wear is worn all year round. Of course for special occasions and festivities every one is dressed up. Also to go to church or any other religious event, casual clothing is not appropriate.

In the summer, it is ok to wear shorts, slippers, t-shirts with no sleeves during the day. Except for the beach bars, the rest of the bars and cafeterias are not happy to see you sitting just wearing a swim or bathing suit. In the evening some restaurants and hotels expect men to wear long trousers. When entering a church, be aware to take of your hat or cap.

Mijas does not really have a typical clothing but they wear the same traditional clothing as in Malaga. In fact Malaga has three types of traditional clothing : "Malagueña" which is a lot more luxurious that other two, the "Verdial" used by the people from the mountains of Malaga, and the "Marengo" used by fishermen and people near the coasts. It is a custom to wear special clothes during the ferias and other festivities.

Besides these, you also have the traditional Flamenco dresses, famous in the whole of Andalusia. The flamenco dress is always long and reaches until the ankle. It is decorated on the skirt and on the sleeves with ruffles. These dresses are very colorful and the most known one is the polka doted or 'traje de lunares'. Even if you do not want to dress up like this, most little girls adore flamenco dresses and you can buy them in nearly every souvenir shop in Mijas. An idea for a gift back home?

As said, Mijas has the advantage of having a lot of expatriates and on the International day of Mijas, you can see all these nationalities and cultures. Most people dress up that day in their traditional clothing of their country and are happy to tell you more about their culture.
