The currency used in Mijas, Spain is the Euro. If you are coming from a non-euro zone country, you can best exchange money directly on arrival to pay the bus or taxi.

You have different ways of currency exchange in Mijas. You can either go to the bank with other divises then euro's and exchange them in a bank. The bank always displays the official exchanging rate. Be aware that banks do charge a commission on this exchange, although they are nearly all the same whatever bank you go to. Banks are opened every morning from Monday to Friday until 2pm.

Another possibility is to use one of the exchange offices that are situated in Mijas. These apply a similar exchanging rate but the commission tends to be slightly lower. The advantage of these exchanging bureaus is their opening times. Most of them are also open on Saturdays (even Sundays during the summer) and some even open in the afternoon.

Another possibility is to retrieve cash with your credit card from the cash machines, this will always give you cash in Euro's and depending on your credit card company, the commission is lower then when making a currency exchange in a bank. When you arrive in Malaga airport, you have an exchange office in the arrival hall that is opened nearly daily.

To exchange Euro's for English Pounds is another useful information for those who want to go on an excursion to Gibraltar. Indeed, in Gibraltar you need to pay with English pounds. Most shops and restaurants accept credit cards but it is good to have a few pounds on you for the parking fee, a drink in a pub or a small souvenir that you want to bring along.
