If you come all the way with your car from the north or have a rental from the airport of Malaga, it is easy to reach your destination. A detailled description how drive by car to Mijas is mentioned below.
Whether you come from the west, Cadiz, or Malaga, the east, you will use the A-7 by car to reach Mijas. This road that runs parallel with the coast was formally indicated with N340. The A-7 splits into 2 motorways, just before Fuengirola when driving from Malaga direction Algeciras. One is a payed motorway with toll booths, AP-7 and the other one is a normal motorway A-7. For your arrival at Mijas, we recommend you the motorway A-7 without Toll. You will safe money and the time difference between both roads is very small even during the busy summer months.
From the Airport of Malaga or when you reach Malaga from the AP-46, you need to take the A-7/AP-7 direction Algeciras. This motorway first takes you up in the mountains to avoid the busy cities of Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Before arriving to Fuengirola this road divides into a motorway with toll direction Marbella and the road I recommend, the A-7 Motorway direction Fuengirola. After this division you will reach Fuengirola soon. Once passed Fuengirola this motorway runs even next to the sea and when you reach EL Faro, the lighthouse, you are already in Mijas Costa. Don't get tempted to leave the A-7 before reaching the lighthouse as the indications Mijas are for the white village up in the mountains. The directions how to reach by car Mijas Pueblo are indicated a bit lower in this section.
On these A-7 you have several exits to your destination, La Cala, Riviera del sol or Calahonda. If your accommodation is in Mijas Pueblo you need to leave the A-7 before reaching the lighthouse. U take the same road directions as mentioned above until the division with the toll road. Once passed this division you take the exit 214, direction Mijas, you will reach the beautiful white village via the A368. Should you miss this exit, don't worry, a bit further you will have a second option to take the road to Mijas Pueblo. This exit is number 213 from Fuengirola. At the first roundeboud you take the first road leading north. A sign mentionning Mijas is clearly shown. The road is called Carretera Mijas - Fuengirola and leads you through the mountains to the village.
The A-7 is as mentioned before a motorway that links all the coastal cities to each other. You can not compare this road with our type of motorways. The driveways to get on to this road and exits are very short and you need to be extra alert, especially at these driveways. You nearly have no or very short driveways onto the motorway, which means cars come onto the motorways from a standstill position. It is therefore recommendable to change to the left lane, if possible, to give the other cars the possibility to access safely the motorway. The speed limit on the A-7 is set at 120 km between Malaga and Fuengirola. Once you reach Fuengirola it comes down to 100 or 80 km. The speed limits are well indicated on the road and radar controls are frequent.
If you need to reach Mijas Costa from the west, from Cadiz , you need to take the E5 direction Gibraltar. From Gibraltar or La Linea (first spanish city after Gibraltar), you take the A-7 direction Marbella and Malaga. Here again you have the choice between the normal motorway and the one that you need to pay for. The price at this toll road is about 5€ and gives you a gain in time only during the summer. Follow the A-7 until you pass Marbella and then you will automatically reach Mijas Costa. If you have chosen the toll way, exit 200 Riviera del Sol, is your best option to reach the coast of Mijas.
