In most shops, restaurants and even bars you can pay with your credit card in Mijas. You also want to use to take money during your holiday from the cash machines or ATM's.
Credit card or debit cards are accepted allround and are practical as you do not have to travel with lots of money on you. Hotels, restaurants, shops and even some bars are equiped with a terminal for credit card in Mijas.
Most of the attendance or waiters will ask you for a photograph identificaton to certify the card is indeed yours. Even when this one if protected with a pin code or when you purchased only for a small amount. Your ID or even a drivers licence will do. On the front window of the shops and restaurants, they clearly indicate the type of credit cards accepted.
There are a sufficient number of cash draw machines or ATM's to withdraw the local currency in Mijas. Some of these machines charge you an extra commission per withdraw. This is clearly notified on the screen during the proces and you can cancel the transaction at any time to avoid these extra costs. Spain has in fact 3 type of cash machines: Servired, Telebanco 4B and Euro6000. Depending to which bank or system your home bank is linked to you will or not pay a commission fee.
Most of the European bank belong to ServiRed, but we do recommend you to check this information with your bank back home. Other practical information that you might check out before your departure from you home country is the maximum amount per day and per week that you may withdraw via a cash machine. Most banks also have a limit on the amount you can pay per day or per week with your credit card abroad. You better check this before your departure as you do not want to get stuck when trying to pay your hotel or rental car.
A tip I want to share with you: take a picture of the front of your credit card and store it in your computer or smartphone. Should your card be lost or stolen you have all the necessary details to provide to the bank to block your card. Telephone numbers for emergency contacts to the bank are located in our section 'telephone numbers of interest'.
If course I hope this does not happen to you, but what to do in case you credit card is lost or stolen during your holiday in Mijas? The first thing you need to do is to report this with your credit card...
